Why not plain epoxy outside
Two reasons, and both matter more here than almost anywhere else in California.
- Ultraviolet light. Standard epoxy ambers and chalks in direct sun. On a north facing covered patio you may not notice for years. On an open pool deck in Bakersfield you will notice in one summer.
- Heat underfoot. A dark, smooth coating around a pool becomes unwalkable in July. Deck systems are specified light and textured for exactly this reason.
What is normally used instead
| System | Typical cost per sq ft | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic cool deck / knockdown | $3 to $6 | Pool surrounds. Reflects heat, textured, repairable. |
| Polyaspartic with grit | $6 to $10 | Patios that need to look finished and resist stains. |
| Stamped concrete overlay | $8 to $15 | Covering tired concrete with a decorative surface. |
Slip resistance is not optional
Any coating within a few feet of water needs a texture additive. Ask specifically what grit is going into the top coat. A smooth, beautiful pool deck is a liability, and reputable contractors will refuse to install one.
Timing
The best months for exterior coatings here are spring and fall. Mid summer applications are possible but crews have to start at dawn, and some products simply should not be installed on a slab that is over 90 degrees.
